Pitru Paksha 2026: Day-wise Shradh Dates, Tarpan Vidhi & Significance
Pitru Paksha (The Fortnight of the Ancestors) is a sacred 16-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to paying homage to our forefathers. It is believed that during this time, the souls of our ancestors descend from Pitri Loka to Earth to bless their lineage.
Performing Tarpan and Shradh during this time releases our ancestors from any bondage and resolves Pitru Dosha in the horoscope.

- Grandsons: Grandsons can perform Shradh for their grandfathers.
- Pitru Dosha: Anyone suffering from Pitru Dosha in their horoscope should perform this puja to appease ancestors and remove obstacles from life.
Tarpan Vidhi: Step-by-Step Guide
Tarpan is the act of offering water mixed with sesame seeds to the ancestors to satisfy their thirst and hunger. Ideally, this should be performed on the banks of holy rivers like the Ganga, but it can also be performed at home under the guidance of a Pandit.
- Direction: Always face South while performing Pitru Tarpan.
- Key Ingredients: Black Sesame (Til), Barley (Jau), Kusha Grass, White Flowers, and Water.
- The Ritual: Wear a ring made of Kusha grass. Offer water through the space between the thumb and forefinger (Pitru Teerth).
