Significance & The Legend of Vrinda

According to the Padma Purana, Tulsi was originally a woman named Vrinda, the devoted wife of the demon king Jalandhar. Her piety made Jalandhar invincible. To defeat him, Lord Vishnu had to break her chastity in disguise. Realizing the trick, Vrinda cursed Vishnu to turn into a stone (Shaligram) and immolated herself. From her ashes grew the Tulsi plant.
To honor her devotion, Lord Vishnu promised to marry her in her Tulsi form every year as Shaligram. This union is celebrated as Tulsi Vivah.
- Wedding Season Opener: It marks the start of the auspicious Hindu wedding season.
- Kanyadaan Merit: Performing Tulsi Vivah is believed to grant the same merit (Punya) as performing Kanyadaan (giving away a daughter in marriage).
- Spiritual Purity: Tulsi is revered as “Vishnupriya” (Beloved of Vishnu) and brings health, wealth, and moksha.
Tulsi Vivah Puja Vidhi: How to Celebrate?
The ceremony mimics a traditional Hindu wedding.
1. Preparation of the Mandap
Decorate the area around the Tulsi plant with rangoli and flowers. Create a small mandap using sugarcane stalks. The Tulsi plant is the bride, and the Shaligram stone (or Vishnu idol) is the groom.
2. Shringar (Adornment)
Wrap a red cloth (Chunri) around the Tulsi pot and adorn it with bangles, bindi, and jewelry. Dress the Shaligram in a yellow cloth (Dhoti).
3. The Wedding Rituals
- Tie a sacred yellow thread (Gathbandhan) linking the Tulsi and Shaligram.
- Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and perform the marriage rites.
- Shower the couple with Akshat (rice mixed with turmeric) and vermilion.
- Offer special Naivedya (Bhog) including sweet potato, tamarind, and amla.
4. Aarti & Prasad
Perform the Tulsi Aarti and distribute Prasad to family members. It is customary for the couple performing the puja to observe a fast until the ceremony concludes.
