Significance of 16 Somvar Vrat

Monday (Somvar) is ruled by the Moon (Soma), which adorns Lord Shiva’s head. Worshiping Shiva on this day brings mental peace and fulfills wishes.

  • For Marriage: Unmarried girls observe this fast to get a husband with qualities like Lord Shiva.
  •

  • For Couples: Married women perform it for the longevity and health of their husbands and peace in married life.
  •

  • For Health: It is beneficial for people with a weak Moon in their horoscope (Kundali), helping cure ailments related to stress and emotions.
  •

  • Planetary Doshas: Helps in overcoming the malefic effects of Chandra Dosh.

When to Start Solah Somvar Vrat?

While you can start on any Monday of the Shukla Paksha (Waxing Phase of the Moon), the following months are considered most auspicious:

  1. Shravan Maas (July-August): The holiest month for Shiva devotees. Starting on the first Monday of Sawan is highly recommended.
  2.

  3. Chaitra (March-April)
  4.

  5. Vaishakha (April-May)
  6.

  7. Kartika (October-November)

Step-by-Step Solah Somvar Vrat Vidhi

Follow this procedure for 16 consecutive Mondays with pure devotion.

1. Sankalp (Morning Ritual)

Wake up during Brahma Muhurta (before sunrise). After a bath, wear clean clothes (preferably white). Stand before the Shiva Linga and take a vow (Sankalp) to complete the 16 Mondays fast without interruption.

2. Shiva Puja & Abhishekam

Perform Abhishekam on the Shiva Linga with water and Panchamrit while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”. Apply Chandan and offer Bel Patra (always with the smooth side facing the Linga).

3. Vrat Katha (The Story)

It is mandatory to read or listen to the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha. The story recounts how a cursed priest regained his health and prosperity by observing this fast, inspiring Mata Parvati to do the same.

4. Prasad & Fasting Rules

  • The unique aspect of this fast is the Prasad. Prepare Churma (roasted wheat flour mixed with ghee and jaggery).
  •

  • Divide the Prasad into 3 equal parts:

    • One part for Lord Shiva (leave at the temple).
    •

    • One part to distribute among devotees/family.
    •

    • One part for yourself to break the fast.
  •

  • Diet: Eat only one meal in the evening (the Prasad). It is strictly advised to avoid salt. Drink water and eat fruits during the day if needed.
