Significance of Swarna Gowri Vrat

The festival celebrates the divine power of Goddess Gauri. Legends say that Goddess Parvati performed intense penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased by her devotion, Shiva married her.

Therefore, women observe this Vrat for Soubhagya (marital bliss). The tradition involves tying a sacred thread called Gauridaara (a yellow thread with 16 knots) on the right wrist, symbolizing the 16 forms of wealth and prosperity.

Rituals: How to Perform Gowri Puja at Home?

  1. Installation: Clean the puja area and place a Mandapa decorated with banana stems and mango leaves. Install the idol of Goddess Gowri (usually made of turmeric or clay) on a plate with rice.
  2. Alankaram: Decorate the Goddess with vastra (saree/cloth), jewelry, and fresh flowers.
  3. Gauridaara Puja: Worship the sacred 16-knotted thread with turmeric and kumkum.
  4. Bagina Offering: Prepare Bagina (a traditional offering) consisting of turmeric, kumkum, bangles, comb, mirror, blouse piece, coconut, jaggery, and cereals. One bagina is offered to the Goddess, and others are exchanged with married women.
  5. Naivedyam: Offer traditional dishes like Obbattu (Holige), Payasam, Chitranna, and Kosambari.
  6. Visarjan: Perform the Visarjan ritual the next day or on the third day along with Lord Ganesha.
