Significance of Vat Savitri Puja
The Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) represents eternity and longevity due to its ever-expanding branches. Women pray to this sacred tree to seek the same longevity for their husband’s life.
The Legend of Savitri: The Vrat Katha narrates the story of Savitri, a devoted wife who tricked Lord Yama into granting back the life of her husband Satyavan. Her determination and wit are celebrated on this day, symbolizing the power of a wife’s devotion (Pativrata Dharma).
Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi (Rituals)
- Preparation: Wake up early, take a holy bath, and wear new traditional clothes and jewelry (Solah Shringar). Observe a fast (Vrat).
- Tree Worship: Visit a nearby Banyan tree or place a branch in a pot at home. Offer water, turmeric, kumkum, and flowers to the tree.
- Tying the Thread: Tie a white or red sacred thread (Kalava/Sut) around the tree trunk while circumambulating (Parikrama) it 7 or 108 times. This symbolizes the bond of protection.
- Offerings: Offer soaked gram (chana), fruits (especially mangoes and jackfruit), sweets, and pooris.
- Katha & Aarti: Listen to the Satyavan-Savitri Katha recited by a priest or an elderly woman. Conclude with Aarti.
- Breaking Fast: After the puja, break the fast by consuming the soaked gram and water. Seek blessings from elders and your husband.
