Utpanna Ekadashi 2026: Date, Parana Time, Story & Vrat Vidhi
Utpanna Ekadashi (also known as Utpatti Ekadashi) is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar. It marks the birth of Goddess Ekadashi—a divine Shakti that emerged from Lord Vishnu to annihilate the demon Mura. Unlike other Ekadashis that celebrate a specific deity, this day celebrates the origin of the fast itself.
For devotees who wish to begin the sacred practice of Ekadashi fasting, Utpanna Ekadashi is considered the most auspicious day to start. It falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Margashirsha.

The Legend of Demon Mura (Vrat Katha)

The significance of this Ekadashi is rooted in the Bhavishya Purana. In the Satyuga, a terrifying demon named Mura defeated the Devas and drove Indra out of Heaven. The Devas approached Lord Vishnu for protection. A fierce battle ensued between Vishnu and Mura, lasting for 10,000 years.
Exhausted, Lord Vishnu retired to a cave named Hemavati in Badrikashram to rest. While he was in Yoga Nidra (divine sleep), Demon Mura tried to kill him. Suddenly, a radiant Goddess manifested from Vishnu’s body. Armed with divine weapons, she fought Mura and killed him instantly with a roar.
When Vishnu awoke, he was pleased with the Goddess. She introduced herself: “I am your Shakti, born from your body to protect you.” Lord Vishnu named her Ekadashi (as she was born on the 11th lunar day) and granted her a boon that anyone who fasts on this day will be freed from sins and attain Moksha.
