🕉️ Shravan Maas 2026 – Dates, Somvar Vrat, Rituals & Significance
What is Shravan Maas?
Shravan Maas (also called Sawan Maas) is the fifth and holiest month in the Hindu calendar, dedicated entirely to Lord Shiva. Falling during the monsoon season (July-August), this month signifies the spiritual union of Shiva and Shakti (Parvati).
According to Vedic scriptures, this is the best time to please Mahadev. Every Monday (Shravan Somvar) during this period is considered highly auspicious for fasting and performing Rudrabhishek. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Shiva in Shravan washes away sins and fulfills all desires.
During this sacred month, devotees perform Maha Mrityunjay Homa, Rudra Homa, and Rudrabhishek Puja to invoke divine blessings for health, wealth, and marital bliss.

Significance & Legend of Shravan Maas

The Legend of Samudra Manthan: During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) by Devas and Asuras, a deadly poison called Halahal emerged. To save the universe, Lord Shiva drank this poison, which turned his throat blue (Neelkantha). To cool the burning effect of the poison, the Devas offered him water from the Holy Ganges. This event happened in the month of Shravan. Therefore, offering water (Jalabhishek) to the Shivling in this month is considered the highest form of worship.
Key Spiritual Practices
- Rudrabhishek: Bathing the Shivling with Panchamrit (Milk, Curd, Ghee, Honey, Sugar) helps remove negativity and fulfills wishes.
- Mangala Gauri Vrat: Observed by married women on Tuesdays in Shravan for the long life of their husbands.
- Solah Somvar Vrat: Many devotees start the 16 Monday Fast (Solah Somvar) from the first Monday of Sawan for a good life partner.
