Parivartini Ekadashi 2026 Lord Vishnu Turning Side

Parivartini Ekadashi 2026: Date, Parana Time, Vrat Katha & Significance

Parivartini Ekadashi (also known as Parsva Ekadashi or Jaljhulni Ekadashi) falls on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. The word “Parivartini” refers to “turning” or “changing.” It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu, who is in Yoga Nidra during Chaturmas, changes his sleeping position from his left side to his right side.

In 2026, Parivartini Ekadashi falls on a Tuesday. This day is also celebrated as Vamana Jayanti, as Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar is said to have appeared on this Tithi.

Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi

Lord Krishna explained the importance of this day to King Yudhishthira. He stated that observing this fast grants the same merit as performing the Vajapeya Yajna. Worshiping Lord Vamana (the dwarf incarnation) on this day liberates a person from all sins and grants them a place in Vaikuntha. It is also believed to bring rain and prosperity to the land.

Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Vamana Avatar Story)

The legend associated with this day is of King Bali (grandson of Prahlada). Though born in a demon (Asura) lineage, Bali was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Through his penance and strength, he conquered the three worlds, displacing Indra from Heaven.

To restore balance, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin boy. He approached King Bali during a Yajna and asked for alms—just three paces of land measured by his small feet. The generous King Bali agreed, despite his Guru Shukracharya’s warning.

Lord Vamana then grew to a cosmic size (Trivikrama). With his first step, he covered the Earth; with the second, the Heavens. When he asked where to place his third step, King Bali humbly offered his own head.

Pleased by Bali’s surrender, Lord Vishnu placed his foot on Bali’s head, pushing him to the netherworld (Sutala) but making him the ruler there. He also granted Bali a boon that He (Vishnu) would always be present at his door as a doorkeeper. This event is commemorated on Parivartini Ekadashi.
