Papankusha Ekadashi 2026: Date, Parana Time, Vrat Katha & Benefits
Papankusha Ekadashi is observed on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin. The name is a combination of two words: “Papa” (Sin) and “Ankusha” (the elephant goad/hook). Just as a small metal goad can control a massive elephant, observing this Vrat is believed to pierce through and destroy mountains of sins accumulated over lifetimes.
In 2026, Papankusha Ekadashi falls on a Wednesday. The deity worshipped on this day is Lord Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu with a lotus emerging from his navel).

Significance of Papankusha Ekadashi
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Lord Krishna states that the merit of this Ekadashi equals performing **100 Surya Yajnas** or **1,000 Ashwamedha Yajnas**.
It grants the devotee:
- Liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
- Good health, wealth, and a virtuous spouse.
- The ability to liberate ancestors from suffering.
Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story of Krodhana)
The legend tells of a cruel hunter named Krodhana who lived in the Vindhya mountains. He spent his entire life committing violence, killing animals, and engaging in sinful activities. As he grew old, he became fearful of death and the punishment of Yamaraja (God of Death).
Seeking redemption, Krodhana approached the great Sage Angira in his forest ashram. He fell at the sage’s feet and asked, *”O Sage, I have committed heinous sins all my life. Is there any way I can be saved from the tortures of Hell?”*
Sage Angira, known for his compassion, advised the hunter to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat which falls in the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. The hunter followed the instructions with utmost faith. He fasted, stayed awake at night, and worshipped Lord Vishnu.
By the power of this Vrat, all his sins were pierced and destroyed like an Ankusha controls an elephant. Krodhana attained a divine form and ascended to Vaikuntha at the end of his life.
