Holi 2026: Date, Holika Dahan Muhurat, Rituals & Significance

Holi, the “Festival of Colors” or “Festival of Love,” is one of the most vibrant and joyous festivals in India. It celebrates the arrival of spring, the blossoming of love, and the victory of good over evil. The festival is celebrated over two days: Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi) and Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi).

Colors are a crucial aspect of life, providing a break from monotony. Holi is not just about playing with colors; it is deeply rooted in mythology, centering on the legends of Radha-Krishna and Prahlad-Hiranyakashipu. Why is Holi Celebrated? Significance & Legends

1. The Legend of Prahlad & Holika

The most famous legend associated with Holi involves King Hiranyakashipu, his devout son Prahlad, and his sister Holika. Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, which angered his father. Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika (who had a boon to be immune to fire) to sit in a pyre with Prahlad to kill him. However, due to Prahlad’s devotion, he was saved by Lord Vishnu, while Holika burnt to ashes. This event is commemorated as Holika Dahan, signifying the victory of good over evil.

2. The Legend of Radha & Krishna

In the Braj region (Mathura, Vrindavan), Holi celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna. It is said that young Krishna, envious of Radha’s fair complexion, playfully smeared colors on her face. This prank evolved into the tradition of playing with colors, known as Rangwali Holi.
