Hartalika Teej 2026: Date, Puja Muhurat, Vrat Katha & Vidhi

Hartalika Teej is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by Hindu women, dedicated to Goddess Parvati and her reunion with Lord Shiva. It falls on the Tritiya Tithi (3rd day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

The name “Hartalika” comes from two words: ‘Harat’ (abduction) and ‘Aalika’ (female friend). According to legend, Goddess Parvati’s friends took her deep into the forest to save her from marrying Lord Vishnu against her wish, allowing her to perform penance to win Lord Shiva.

Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha (Legend)

The legend narrates the story of Goddess Parvati’s immense devotion. In her previous birth, she was determined to marry Lord Shiva. Her father, King Himavan, wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu. To avoid this, her friends abducted her into a thick forest.

There, she made a Shiva Linga out of sand and performed severe penance. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and accepted her as his wife. Since then, this day is celebrated to honor their divine union.
