Ganga Saptami 2026 - Legend of Jahnu Rishi releasing Ganga from his ear

Ganga Saptami 2026 Date & Madhyahna Muhurat: Puja Vidhi, Jahnu Saptami Significance

Ganga Saptami, often revered as Ganga Jayanti or Jahnu Saptami, is a spiritually charged day in the Hindu calendar dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Unlike Ganga Dussehra (which marks her descent to Earth), this auspicious day marks her rebirth.

Falling on the Saptami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in Vaisakha month, this day is believed to possess the power to wash away even the most stubborn sins (Paap) and bring eternal peace to one’s ancestors. Devotees who perform Deepdan (donating lamps) and bathe in the holy river on this day invoke the direct blessings of Lord Shiva and Mother Ganga.

Why is it Called “Jahnu Saptami”? (The Legend)

The story of Ganga Saptami is fascinating and distinct from Ganga Dussehra. According to mythology:

When Goddess Ganga descended to Earth, her turbulent waters threatened to destroy the hermitage of Sage Jahnu. Angered by the disturbance, the sage drank up the entire river.

Upon the prayers of King Bhagiratha and other gods, Sage Jahnu relented and released Ganga through his ear on the Saptami of Vaisakha Shukla Paksha. Thus, Ganga was reborn as the daughter of Jahnu Rishi and came to be known as Jahnavi. This day celebrates her rebirth and return to humanity.

Difference: Ganga Saptami vs. Ganga Dussehra

Many devotees confuse these two dates. Here is the clear distinction:

  • Ganga Saptami: Marks the day Ganga was reborn (released) by Sage Jahnu.
  • Ganga Dussehra: Marks the day Ganga originally descended from Heaven (Swarga) to Earth (Prithvi).

  2. Sankalp: Hold water and flowers in your hand and take a vow to perform puja for the peace of your ancestors.
  3. Worship: Set up an idol of Goddess Ganga (or a Kalash representing her). Offer white flowers, sandalwood (chandan), and fruits.
