Ganesha Jayanti 2026: Date, Puja Muhurat, Vidhi & Significance

Ganesha Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and new beginnings. It is celebrated on the Shukla Chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon) in the month of Magha.

While the more popular Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated in Bhadrapada (August-September), Ganesha Jayanti holds immense significance, especially in Maharashtra and the Konkan regions. It is also known as Magha Shukla Chaturthi, Til Kund Chaturthi, and Varad Chaturthi.

Significance of Ganesha Jayanti

ganesha jayanti

According to legends, on this day, Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha out of turmeric paste (Ubtan) from her own body and breathed life into him. Hence, he is also known as Sindur Varna (vermillion colored).

Another belief associated with this day is the prohibition of viewing the moon. It is said that the Moon God (Chandra) mocked Ganesha’s appearance, leading to a curse. Viewing the moon on Ganesha Jayanti (similar to Ganesha Chaturthi) is believed to bring false accusations (Mithya Dosha).
