Ganesha Chaturthi 2026: Date, Puja Muhurat, Vidhi & Visarjan Schedule
Ganesha Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of India’s most spectacular festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha—the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the god of new beginnings. Celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month, this 10-day extravaganza fills the streets with the chant of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!”.
For 2026, Ganesha Chaturthi falls on Monday, September 14, 2026. It is believed that bringing the Ganesha idol home and worshipping him with devotion removes all hurdles from one’s life.

Significance: Why We Celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi
Legend has it that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha out of sandalwood paste (or turmeric) to guard her while she bathed. When Lord Shiva tried to enter, Ganesha stopped him, leading to a conflict where Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. To pacify Parvati, Shiva replaced the head with that of an elephant and granted him the boon of being Pratham Pujya (First Worshipped).
Celebrating Ganesha Chaturthi invokes wisdom (Buddhi), prosperity (Riddhi), and success (Siddhi).
Ganesha Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step Guide
1. Avahana & Pratishthapana (Installation)
Bring the idol home with chanting. Place it on a clean altar (Chowki) covered with red cloth. Invoke the life force into the idol (Prana Pratishtha) by chanting mantras and offering Akshata (rice).
2. Shodashopachara Puja
Perform the 16-step worship ritual. Offer Red Hibiscus flowers (Ganesha’s favorite) and Durva Grass (21 blades). Light a lamp and incense.
3. Naivedyam (Food Offering)
Offer 21 Modaks (steamed or fried dumplings) as they are Ganesha’s favorite sweet. Other offerings include Laddoos, Coconut, and Bananas.
4. Aarti & Visarjan
Perform the “Jai Ganesh Deva” Aarti morning and evening. On the final day (1.5, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days later), immerse the idol in water (Visarjan), asking him to return next year.
