Significance of Apara Ekadashi
Lord Krishna narrated the importance of this fast to King Yudhishthira. He stated that observing Apara Ekadashi provides the same merit as:
- Taking a holy dip in the Ganges during Kartik month.
- Donating cows (Godan) and gold.
- Performing a Yajna.
It is specifically known to nullify the sin of perjury (giving false witness), speaking lies, reading false scriptures, and criticism of others.
Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story of King Mahidhwaja)
In ancient times, there was a righteous king named Mahidhwaja. He had a younger brother named Vajradhwaja, who was cruel and unrighteous. Vajradhwaja was jealous of the King’s fame and plotted against him. One night, he killed King Mahidhwaja and buried his body under a wild Peepal tree in the forest.
Due to his untimely and violent death, King Mahidhwaja became a Preta (Ghost) and started living on that Peepal tree. He suffered greatly and caused trouble for passersby.
One day, a learned sage named Dhaumya Rishi passed by that path. With his divine vision, he saw the ghost and understood the King’s tragic past. Filled with compassion, the Sage decided to help him.
Sage Dhaumya observed the Apara Ekadashi Vrat on behalf of the ghost. He offered the entire merit (Punya) of the fast to the spirit of King Mahidhwaja. Instantly, the King was liberated from the ghostly form. He transformed into a celestial being, thanked the Sage, and ascended to Vaikuntha in a divine chariot.
