Why is Amavasya Significant?
In Hindu culture, Amavasya (New Moon) is dedicated to ancestors. It is believed that on this day, the forefathers come down to the earth realm. Offering Tila (Sesame) and water to them (Tarpan) brings peace to their souls and removes Pitri Dosha.
Important Rituals:
- Pitri Tarpan: Offering water and black sesame seeds to ancestors.
- Fasting: Many devotees observe a fast to reduce negativity.
- Donation (Daan): Feeding Brahmins or the poor is considered highly auspicious.
